Is Your Student Card a Little too Smart?

This fall at Northern Arizona University, students will have to swipe their IDs at lecture halls, and professors will be able to track who shows up. Using $85,000 in federal stimulus money, the university is installing computer card readers at the 60 largest classrooms. The point is to save time in taking attendance. It will be up to teachers whether to factor attendance in their grading. Still, the idea doesn’t sit well with some.

More than 1,400 students have signed a petition against the project. “We’re grown-ups,” complains Rachel Brackett, a junior who created the “N.A.U. Against Proximity Cards” Facebook group. “We don’t need to be told to go to class. We’re paying to go to class.”
